1.   Do I need a referral to be seen at Hand Therapy Centre?

Private patients do not need a referral however post surgical patients will generally have a referral from their surgeon. If you are claiming through Worker cover, The Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) or the Enhanced Primary Care Plans you will need a referral from your doctor.

Prior approval of your consultation/treatment is generally required with work cover.

2.   I just need a splint, do I need to make an appointment?

We do our best to accommodate patients on the day. It is ideal to schedule an appointment and if your condition is urgent please let the receptionist know at the time of scheduling.

3.   What do I bring to my first appointment

  • Please bring your referral, x-rays, doctors’ reports and other investigations that have been completed.
  • Do not remove dressings or bandages that were applied during surgery, unless instructed to do so by your surgeon. If you get your dressings wet prior to your appointment with us, please call and we can arrange for an earlier review.
  • Bring any billing or claim details you may have such as Work Cover claim number or your Department of Veterans Affairs card.

4.   Is parking available at the clinic?

New Lambton

Parking is available for $3 per hour in the car park outside the Newcastle Private Medical Suites. There is also car parking available in car park six of the John Hunter Hospital, which is a short walk to the rooms.

East Maitland

Enter via Porter Avenue and there is parking directly out the front of the rooms at no charge.

5.   Can I claim on my private health insurance ?

Yes, if you have extras cover your appointment is claimable under occupational or physiotherapy. The level of rebate you get back will depend on your level of cover.  We have HICAPS available for claiming on the day.

6.   How long is my consultation?

Initial consultations are booked in for 30-60 minutes depending on the complexity of your injury. Post operative consultations where possible are booked during your surgeons clinic to aid communication during the rehabilitation process.

Follow up consultations are generally booked for 30 minutes. The frequency of your appointments will depend on a number of things, such as how far away you live, and whether you have a splint or wound that needs reviewing, your injury, and how well you are progressing.

7.   Can I see a therapist closer to home?

The clinic services a large regional area and we have offices in Newcastle and Maitland. If you live outside the Hunter area we will endeavour to find an experienced hand therapist closer to home and liaise with them to provide this transition.
